ISN Editor Talks to Luigi Barconi, Fresh Produce Buyer at Carrefour Italy

Italy is renowned for its rich culinary heritage, heavily influenced by the availability and consumption of fresh produce, particularly fruits and vegetables. The country has a vibrant market for fresh products, where seasonal and locally-sourced items are highly valued. However, nearly 50% of fresh produce consumed in Italy is imported, reflecting both consumer demand for a diverse range of products and the country’s agricultural limitations. This reliance on imports raises questions about sourcing practices, quality assurance, and sustainability, particularly regarding certifications such as Fair Trade. Additionally, branding plays a crucial role in the fresh produce market, as consumers often prefer familiar and trusted labels. Understanding these dynamics can provide valuable insights into the Italian fresh produce landscape.

Interview

  1. Sourcing Strategy:
Can you describe Carrefour Italy’s strategy for sourcing fresh produce? How do you balance between local and imported products?
Luigi Barconi: At Carrefour Italy, we prioritize sourcing fresh produce that meets our quality standards and customer expectations. We strive to maintain a balanced approach, incorporating both local and imported products. We work closely with local farmers to support Italian agriculture, but we also import a variety of fruits and vegetables to ensure our customers have access to a diverse range of products year-round.
  2. Fair Trade Certification:
Is Fair Trade certification a requirement for the fresh produce you purchase? How important is it to your sourcing decisions and to your consumers?
Luigi Barconi: While Fair Trade certification is not a strict requirement for all fresh produce, it plays an important role in our sourcing decisions. We believe in supporting ethical practices and ensuring fair compensation for producers. Many of our customers are increasingly aware of these issues, so offering Fair Trade options helps us align with consumer values.
  3. Consumer Preferences:
What trends have you noticed regarding Italian consumers’ preferences for branded fresh produce? Do they prioritize brands over local or organic options?
Luigi Barconi: We’ve observed a growing trend among consumers who appreciate both branded and local produce. While many customers are drawn to trusted brands for quality assurance, there is also a strong interest in local and organic options. It’s essential for us to offer a variety of choices to meet diverse consumer preferences.
  4. Quality Control:
What measures does Carrefour Italy take to ensure the quality and safety of the fresh produce you sell, especially regarding imported items?
Luigi Barconi: Quality control is a top priority for us. We implement rigorous testing and inspection protocols for all fresh produce, especially imports. This includes assessing the quality upon arrival, checking for compliance with safety standards, and conducting regular audits of our suppliers to ensure consistent quality.
  5. Sustainability Initiatives:
How is Carrefour Italy addressing sustainability in its fresh produce supply chain? Are there any specific initiatives or partnerships aimed at improving sustainability in sourcing?
Luigi Barconi: Sustainability is at the core of our operations. We are actively working on initiatives to reduce food waste, enhance sustainable farming practices, and promote environmentally friendly packaging. Additionally, we partner with organizations that focus on sustainable agriculture to support practices that benefit both producers and the environment.
