My Visit to SIAL: A Return to Larger Trade Exhibitions

By Alain Frear

During my visit to SIAL, it became abundantly clear that large trade exhibitions are making a strong comeback. The excitement in the air was undeniable as I walked through the exhibition halls, witnessing the return of in-person networking and discovery. The scale of participation this year was impressive, with innovations, new countries joining the scene, and big crowds filling every corner of the event. It felt like a turning point, and I hadn’t seen this level of enthusiasm and activity since before COVID.

Every exhibitor I spoke to was not only enjoying themselves but also doing great business. There’s a renewed energy in the food trade, and globalisation has made the market more dynamic and prospective on an international level. The exchange of ideas and the introduction of new foods were astonishing. The diversity of products on display was something I hadn’t experienced in a long time—proof that the food industry is thriving and evolving.

One conversation, in particular, stood out to me. I met a cheese producer from Italy who was amazed by the orders coming his way. He told me, “I wouldn’t have believed the countries placing orders with us if you had told me before the show!” This story reflects the global reach that SIAL has achieved, showing just how interconnected the food industry has become.

SIAL demonstrated, more than ever, that in-person interactions are irreplaceable. There’s something special about being able to see, touch, and taste products firsthand—something digital platforms simply cannot replicate. The lively crowds, the buzz of conversations, and the tangible connections made at the exhibition reminded me why large-scale events like SIAL are critical for the food industry. We’re definitely seeing a return to these grand exhibitions, and I’m excited to witness the continued growth and innovation in this space.
