Boosting immunity and spending on supplements to support the immune system are set to be key consumer health trends as winter approaches, according to a poll of 2,000 UK adults by Optibac Probiotics.
Increased spending on beating bugs
According to the study, commissioned by the UK’s No.1 bestselling^ and most recommended† brand of friendly bacteria supplements, more than a quarter of the nation say that avoiding coughs, colds and flu is their top health concern right now. A further 15% say they’ll be spending more this year on avoiding these kinds of bugs than they did last year.
The news comes as Optibac Probiotics has been making national headlines for its efforts to raise awareness of the links between gut health and the immune system. Nutritional Therapist, Louise Mason explained: “Up to 70% of our immune system resides in the gut, so improving your digestive health is one of the best ways to support your immunity. Our study found that 69% of people said they were already aware of a link between gut health and immunity, but only 8% of people had considered taking friendly bacteria to help them prime their gut-immune function against seasonal bugs. That’s why we’re on a mission to deliver the message that friendly bacteria can help the nation prioritise their immune health this winter.”
Prioritising immunity
Immune defences are top of mind for the nation when it comes to health, with 72% saying they’re keen to boost theirs. In fact, more than a quarter of those who want to improve their immunity said that the reason why was they had simply had enough of catching coughs and colds. Other main reasons behind the public’s push for better immunity were so they can live life to the fullest (60%) and to be in good health for their families (44%).
Investing in immunity and gut health
Brits are willing to put their hard-earned pounds into their immunity and gut health this winter, with over 1 in 4 agreeing that spending money on products that boost immunity is worthwhile. The same number felt spending money on gut health was a worthy investment too. Louise Mason from Optibac commented:
“A positive we’ve seen from the study is that 26% of people are taking Vitamin D supplements to fend off colds, versus just 8% taking friendly bacteria. What a lot of people don’t realise though is you can get both in one supplement! As the leader of a team that speak directly to the public every day about their health priorities, we consistently hear that people are looking for an all-in-one solution. It’s this insight and customer demand that led to the formulation of Optibac’s latest innovation, Gut Health Gummies. Not only do these daily gummies contain friendly bacteria and Vitamin D to aid immune health; they also contain Calcium, Zinc and FOS fibres for an all-rounder supplement in a delicious format to meet all your digestive and immune health needs.”
