Hannaford, a prominent grocery chain under the Ahold Delhaize group, is making amends with customers after a prolonged online outage by offering $10 discounts on purchases of $100 or more. The coupons, shared via email, aim to ease frustrations caused by the disruption and are valid through November 27.
In the emailed apology, Hannaford acknowledged the inconvenience caused by the outage: “We appreciate your patience while our website was down, and we’re sorry that you couldn’t use your Just for You coupons as planned.”
The outage, which began around November 7, was the result of a cybersecurity issue that took Hannaford’s website and app offline, forcing the cancellation of online orders. On November 18, Hannaford announced on Facebook that its website had resumed operations, with pickup and delivery slots becoming available.
“We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and deeply value your trust in us to nourish your families,” the company stated.
Parent company Ahold Delhaize confirmed the cybersecurity breach on November 8, launching an investigation and notifying law enforcement. While Hannaford’s platforms were completely shut down, other U.S. banners under Ahold Delhaize — including Stop & Shop, The Giant Company, Giant Food, and Food Lion — remained functional, though customers reported some disruptions in pickup and delivery services.
During the same period, Stop & Shop also dealt with widespread out-of-stock items in its fresh departments, which the chain attributed to IT system issues affecting product shipments. Despite these challenges, all stores under Ahold Delhaize continued their physical operations without interruption.
As investigations into the cybersecurity incident continue, Hannaford has yet to disclose specific details about the breach. Meanwhile, the chain’s effort to restore customer confidence with discounts highlights its commitment to maintaining strong relationships during challenging times.
