Sainsbury’s has teamed up with its long-standing supplier Greencore to deliver one million fresh meals to those facing food insecurity, in partnership with the food redistribution charity FareShare.
From now until the end of April, 25p from every purchase of Sainsbury’s Italian-style ready meals, such as spaghetti bolognaise and carbonara, will go towards funding this initiative. Both in-store and online shoppers will be informed of how their purchases contribute to the cause.
The fresh meals will be produced by Greencore and distributed by FareShare, the UK’s leading food redistribution charity. FareShare will deliver the meals to over 8,000 frontline charities and community projects, including homelessness shelters, after-school clubs, refuges, and lunch clubs for older people.
This effort is part of Sainsbury’s ongoing collaboration with Comic Relief to tackle food insecurity across the UK and follows their winter fundraising campaign, where sales of mince pies helped fund over five million meals.
A Collective Effort
Richard Crampton, Director of Fresh Food at Sainsbury’s, highlighted the importance of collaboration:
“We recognise the need for collective action across the food industry to address food insecurity. Through our partnership with Greencore, a valued supplier, and our ongoing work with Comic Relief, we are proud to provide good food for those who need it most. By combining resources, we can create significant change and ensure fresh meals reach the communities that need them.”
Dalton Philips, CEO of Greencore, shared his enthusiasm for the project:
“We have a long-standing commitment to supporting FareShare and have worked with Comic Relief on similar initiatives. It’s an honour to continue this work alongside Sainsbury’s to help tackle food poverty.”
Kris Gibbon-Walsh, CEO of FareShare, emphasised the wider impact:
“This collaboration shows the power of working together across supply chains. By scaling up food redistribution, we can reach more people in need through our network of over 8,000 charities nationwide. The meals created through this initiative will foster connections within communities and support individuals by strengthening access to essential services. Together, we can make a real difference.”
A Broader Mission
This initiative reflects Sainsbury’s broader mission to tackle food poverty and improve access to nutritious food. As a founding member of FareShare, Sainsbury’s works daily to redistribute depot food surplus and continuously explores new ways to support communities.
By partnering with Greencore and leveraging their collective resources, Sainsbury’s continues to address the critical issue of food insecurity while fostering community resilience and well-being across the UK.
