Tesco Strengthens Backing for British Pig Farmers with Relaunch of Sustainable Farming Group
Tesco has reaffirmed its commitment to British agriculture by reintroducing and expanding its Tesco Sustainable Pig Group (TSPG), in partnership with long-standing supplier Cranswick. This initiative, which aims to support pig farmers across the UK, is projected to inject at least £670 million into the sector over its initial three years.
The TSPG will initially focus on supplying Tesco’s Finest range of fresh pork, with plans to triple its scope within three years to include all core fresh pork and sausages. This expansion will make the group one of the largest farming producer collaborations in the country. To provide stability and encourage investment, farmers will benefit from a hybrid pricing model, combining cost-of-production guarantees with market price bonuses.
The relaunch comes on the back of Tesco increasing its usage of British pork by 20% over the past 18 months, bolstering the production of sausages, bacon, and gammon sourced domestically.
Driving Sustainability and Welfare
The TSPG will serve as a platform for innovation and collaboration, enabling Tesco, suppliers, and farmers to work together to improve animal welfare, enhance quality standards, and explore sustainable practices. Key welfare initiatives include incentivising farms to adopt enhanced farrowing practices and reduce stocking densities.
Ashwin Prasad, Tesco’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the significance of these efforts:
“Our British farmers have faced significant challenges recently, and we’re committed to supporting them. By strengthening our sustainable farming groups, we can foster collaboration, innovation, and improvements in quality, welfare, and sustainability. The new cost-of-production mechanism and bonus incentives will empower farmers to make meaningful investments in their operations.”
A Broader Push for Agricultural Sustainability
The relaunch follows the publication of Tesco’s Greenprint for UK Farming report, developed in collaboration with Harper Adams University’s School of Sustainable Food and Farming. This report outlines strategies for advancing sustainability across the agriculture and food industries, informed by insights from Tesco’s network of farmers.
Tesco’s sustainable farming groups, already active in other categories such as milk, cheese, beef, lamb, and potatoes, offer members transparent pricing, emissions reduction support, and knowledge-sharing opportunities. These groups also facilitate innovation, with a focus on reducing carbon footprints and protecting biodiversity.
Industry Praise and Collaboration
Adam Couch, CEO of Cranswick, praised Tesco’s ongoing efforts:
“Tesco’s commitment to British pig farming ensures the sector’s long-term viability. By combining our farming expertise and Tesco’s retail leadership, we’re well-positioned to accelerate sustainable and higher welfare practices that benefit both producers and consumers.”
Lizzie Wilson from the National Pig Association (NPA) also welcomed the initiative:
“This move underscores Tesco’s dedication to securing a robust British pork supply and supporting pig farmers in achieving sustainability and welfare improvements. We hope other retailers take similar steps to reinforce the sector’s future.”
With the TSPG relaunch, Tesco is taking decisive action to support the UK pig farming industry, ensuring its resilience and sustainability in an increasingly challenging agricultural landscape.
