A salmonella outbreak linked to cucumbers from Florida-based Bedner Growers has now affected 45 people in 18 U.S. states, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed on Friday.
Target has joined other major retailers, including Walmart, in recalling cucumbers and ready-to-eat items containing the produce. Among Target’s recalled products are Boar’s Head Greek-style chicken salad and Mai brand sushi items like tempura maki and California rolls.
The affected cucumbers, distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, were sold between April 29 and May 19.
So far, 16 people have been hospitalised, but no deaths have been reported. The FDA has identified the primary strain as salmonella montevideo, though additional unrelated strains have been detected in samples from a Pennsylvania distribution centre linked to Bedner Growers.
The FDA and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) continue to investigate.
