Leclerc, Intermarché, Super U, Carrefour, Auchan, Casino… The consumer association has calculated the average price of a basket in the main retail chains.
In this period of inflation linked to the rise in fuel, gas, electricity prices, as well as food and hygiene products, knowing the cheapest supermarkets could save precious euros. Especially since in 2022, prices will continue to rise. As every year, UFC-Que Choisir has unveiled its ranking of the cheapest supermarkets. To establish this ranking, the consumer association noted prices in several stores of the eight “main retail chains” last September. Price Differences Between Regions
UFC-Que Choisir specifies that there can be significant price differences between stores of the same chain. For example, volunteers from the association noted a difference that can reach up to 101 euros for the same basket of 98 items in two different Carrefour stores and a difference of 107 euros at Casino.
The geographical location of the supermarket can also affect the final score. Thus, Leclerc stores in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, Brittany, or Pays de la Loire are generally cheaper than those located in Île-de-France or in the Southeast, due to the strong presence of the chain in these first regions.
It is worth noting that to find the cheapest drive-through supermarket near you, UFC-Que Choisir has developed an interactive map accessible online that allows you to compare stores.
