Mercadona, the leading supermarket chain, is set to open 10 new stores in Portugal this year, bringing the total number of supermarkets in the country to 49.

The new store openings will be strategically located in the districts of Porto (3), Braga (1), Lisbon (4), Setúbal (1), and Coimbra (1), marking the company’s debut in the latter. These expansions underline Mercadona’s strong commitment to the Portuguese market.

The company has allocated a significant investment of 280 million euros for the year 2023, demonstrating its long-term vision and dedication to enhancing its presence in Portugal. Moreover, this expansion plan will generate approximately 650 new job opportunities, contributing to the local economy.

The first of the 10 new supermarkets will open its doors in May, starting in Marco de Canaveses. This launch signifies Mercadona’s continued growth and follows its initial entry into the Portuguese market in July 2019.

With the forthcoming openings, Mercadona will further strengthen its foothold in Portugal, with a total of 39 stores already operating across various districts, including Porto, Braga, Aveiro, Viana do Castelo, Setúbal, Santarém, Viseu, Leiria, and Lisbon.

In 2022, the company’s 10 new store openings contributed to a substantial sales volume of 737 million euros. Additionally, Mercadona, through its Portuguese subsidiary Irmãdona Supermercados based in Vila Nova de Gaia, paid 93 million euros in taxes. The company ended the year with a workforce of 3,500 employees and a total investment of 140 million euros.

Mercadona remains committed to making a positive impact on society. In 2022, the company increased its donations to social organizations, benefiting over 70 institutions and providing a total of 1,900 tonnes of essential products to communities in the regions it serves.
