Fans of The Rookie have something significant to look forward to in 2027. ABC has renewed the popular police drama for a ninth season, while at the same time expanding its universe with a new spin-off, The Rookie: North, starring Jay Ellis. The two shows are expected to form a major part of ABC’s 2027 midseason schedule, giving viewers more than one way into the world created by showrunner Alexi Hawley.
The original series, led by Nathan Fillion as John Nolan, has grown considerably from its original premise. Nolan began as a man making a dramatic career change later in life, becoming the oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department. What began as an unusual premise has developed into a long-running ensemble drama combining police action, personal relationships and character-driven storytelling.
Season 9 is particularly anticipated because the previous season ended with a major cliffhanger. Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen, one of the show’s most closely followed couples, became engaged before being abducted and injected with an unknown substance. The new season is expected to deal directly with the consequences, rather than allowing the story to quietly reset.
A New Rookie Arrives in the Pacific Northwest
The biggest development, however, may be happening outside Los Angeles.
The Rookie: North introduces Jay Ellis as Alex Holland, a man who finds himself reassessing his life after a violent home invasion. He subsequently joins the Pierce County Police Department as its oldest rookie, creating an obvious connection with Nolan while moving the franchise into a completely different environment.
Instead of the busy streets of Los Angeles, North will explore the Pacific Northwest, combining urban and rural policing. Hawley has described the setting as a mixture of coastal city life and more isolated forest communities, giving the new series a noticeably different backdrop from the original. The cast includes Ellis alongside Janet Montgomery, Karen Fukuhara, Chris Sullivan, Froy Gutierrez, Mya Lowe and Malik Watson. The series is being produced by Lionsgate Television in partnership with 20th Television, with Hawley continuing as executive producer and writer.
The Two Shows Will Be Connected
This isn’t simply ABC creating another police drama and attaching The Rookie name to it. The network is deliberately building connections between the two programmes.
Hawley has indicated that Nolan will serve as something of a mentor to Alex Holland, and Nathan Fillion is expected to appear in the North premiere. That creates the possibility of future crossover stories between Los Angeles and the Pacific Northwest.
ABC’s decision is an important vote of confidence in the franchise. The network has already identified The Rookie among its strongest performers, ranking it fourth among ABC’s programmes in its 2025–26 multiplatform season rankings for Adults 18–49.
A Bigger Future for The Rookie
The strategy is clear: rather than allowing a successful drama to run its course, ABC is attempting to turn The Rookie into a broader television universe. The approach has already been tried with The Rookie: Feds, which lasted one season, but North returns to the central idea that made the original distinctive — an older person starting over and entering policing later in life.
The new series therefore has a familiar foundation while offering enough differences to stand on its own.
For viewers, that means 2027 could mark a new chapter for the franchise: Season 9 continuing Nolan’s story while The Rookie: North introduces an entirely new team and setting. If the crossover plans work, audiences may not have to choose between the two worlds — they could become part of the same expanding story.
And that may be ABC’s most interesting move of all. Instead of simply giving The Rookie another season, the network is betting that the show’s appeal is big enough to support an entire new generation of rookies.
