Auchan’s French Reset: 266 Supermarkets, No Closures and a Very Different Retail Map

Auchan is completing one of the most significant supermarket network transformations in France, but the headline is not simply about stores being sold. It is about what happens when a major retailer decides that its existing network needs to be fundamentally redesigned.

The transformation covers 266 integrated supermarkets. Seventeen are now in exclusive negotiations with Lidl, while 164 stores are being transferred into an Auchan-owned structure and operated under Intermarché or Netto franchises. A further 72 stores have been acquired by the Mousquetaires group.

What makes the development particularly interesting is that Auchan says the restructuring provides a solution for every one of the 266 stores, with no closures planned.

That changes the way the story should be viewed. This is not simply a supermarket exit. It is a redistribution of supermarket identities across the French market.

A shopper who previously walked into an Auchan supermarket could increasingly find an Intermarché, Netto or Lidl operation occupying that location. The buildings remain part of the grocery ecosystem, but the commercial model, purchasing strategy and customer proposition can change dramatically.

ISN Magazine believes this is becoming a wider European retail question.

The transformation also highlights the growing pressure on traditional supermarket operators to decide which formats deserve investment and which locations can generate more value under another retail model.

For Auchan, the next chapter will therefore be measured less by how many stores disappear from its portfolio and more by whether the reshaped network gives the company a stronger position in French food retail.

Meanwhile, Lidl and the other operators taking over locations gain something retailers rarely get cheaply: established supermarket sites and existing customer catchments.
