Mercadona will invest 60 million euros to put solar roofing on 236 stores.

Mercadona is strengthening its commitment to photovoltaic solar energy and expects to invest around 60 million euros in the installation of solar panels on its rooftops by 2023, reducing emissions from power use considerably.

Mercadona’s goal is to enhance its output of renewable power using solar panels, which saves around 20% of its yearly energy usage compared to a shop without this energy and cuts approximately 30 tonnes of CO2 each supermarket.

The commitment to acquiring energy in a sustainable manner began in certain of its stores by the end of 2020. In 2021, the company reaffirmed its commitment to photovoltaic self-consumption, and in 2022, it invested 14 million euros in the construction of additional solar panels, preventing the emission of almost 3,000 tonnes of CO2 in a single year.

This renewable energy source is now used by the grocery chain in 114 stores, 9 logistics blocks, 3 Colmenas (exclusively for online sales), and the company’s recently opened offices in Albalat dels Sorells (Valencia).

The company expects to have around 350 stores by the end of 2023, as well as an increase in the number of logistics blocks and hives with solar panels on their roofs. With all of this new electricity, they hope to save enough energy to cover the yearly use of 125 stores.

The Valencian company has also unveiled an ambitious plan to install up to 5,000 electric car charging outlets in its facilities, a project in which it will collaborate with Iberdrola and Repsol and will invest 21 million euros.

The company’s objective for 2027, when it defines its roadmap with the tagline “he who has a roof, has a treasure,” is to have self-consumption in more than 850 stores as well as all logistical blocks and Colmenas, which will result in power savings comparable to the consumption of 300 stores.
