Apple’s next iPhone launch could be far more significant than another annual upgrade. The real surprise surrounding the iPhone 18 is not simply a faster processor, a better camera or a new colour. Apple appears to be preparing to change the way it launches the iPhone itself, while placing a completely new device at the centre of attention.
On 9 September, Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, but the biggest attraction could be a device that has been discussed for years but has never appeared in Apple’s product range: its first foldable iPhone. The event, taking place at Apple Park under the “Surprise and Shine” theme, will also mark the beginning of John Ternus’s tenure as Apple’s new chief executive.
The iPhone 18 that won’t arrive
Perhaps the most unusual part of the story is that consumers may not see the standard iPhone 18 on Apple’s September stage at all.
Apple is reportedly splitting the iPhone 18 generation into different launch periods. The premium Pro models are expected to arrive first, while the standard iPhone 18 and other more affordable models could follow in 2027. That would represent a significant departure from Apple’s traditional strategy of introducing the main iPhone family together each autumn.
This could allow Apple to make September a showcase for its most advanced technology rather than treating the event as a launch for the entire iPhone range.
The foldable surprise
The star of the show could therefore be the rumoured iPhone Ultra, Apple’s long-awaited entry into the foldable smartphone market.
The device is expected to open like a book, providing a much larger internal screen while retaining a conventional outer display. Reports suggest an internal display of around 7.7 inches and an external screen of roughly 5.3 inches. The design could also use a titanium frame and a new hinge system intended to minimise the visible crease that has become a characteristic of many folding phones.
Apple’s approach could be deliberately different from the first generation of competing foldables. Rather than presenting folding technology simply as a novelty, the company appears to be positioning the device as an ultra-premium iPhone with a larger, more productive screen.
That could make the price equally surprising. Industry expectations have placed the foldable’s starting price around $2,000, potentially making it the most expensive iPhone Apple has ever produced.
iPhone 18 Pro gets smarter rather than simply different
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to concentrate on refinements that could have a bigger effect in everyday use than a dramatic exterior redesign.
Among the most closely watched developments is a possible variable-aperture main camera, giving the camera greater control over incoming light. A smaller Dynamic Island is also expected, while Apple’s next-generation C2 modem could improve connectivity and reduce the company’s dependence on outside modem technology.
The Pro models are also expected to receive Apple’s next-generation A20 Pro processor, with reports pointing towards substantial improvements in performance and efficiency.
The interesting part is that Apple may not need to make the phone look dramatically different. Instead, the company appears to be concentrating on technologies that users notice through photography, battery life, connectivity and the display.
A new era for Apple
The timing makes the launch even more important.
John Ternus becomes Apple’s chief executive on 1 September, just days before the September product presentation. The iPhone 18 event will therefore become his first major opportunity to present Apple’s future direction to consumers and investors.
That makes the possible foldable iPhone more than another product launch. It could become a statement about where Apple wants the smartphone market to go next.
For years, competitors have experimented with folding screens while Apple watched from the sidelines. If Apple finally enters the category, it will be betting that the technology is ready to move from an interesting alternative into the mainstream premium smartphone market.
The biggest surprise of the iPhone 18 generation, therefore, may be that Apple is not simply launching another iPhone.
It may be launching a new way of thinking about what an iPhone is — and a new strategy for how Apple sells it.
