Asda Takes a Different Route to Christmas Advertising as John Lewis Unveils Its Festive Campaign

ISN – UK Retail News

Asda is taking a distinctly different approach to Britain’s Christmas advertising season, placing supermarket value, family celebrations and the cost of Christmas at the centre of its latest campaign. Launched on 3 November, the campaign arrives on the same day that John Lewis unveiled its much-anticipated Christmas advert, setting up an interesting contrast between two very different retail strategies.

While John Lewis has built its festive reputation around emotional storytelling and memorable characters, Asda is selling something more directly connected to the weekly shopping budget: the opportunity to enjoy Christmas without spending more than necessary.

Five Christmas missions, one retail message

Under the creative direction of its latest campaign, Asda has organised its Christmas offer around five customer missions: hosting, decorating, gifting, grocery home shopping and gathering around the dinner table.

The campaign comprises four 30-second films and an additional digital edit. Each begins with a familiar, picture-perfect Christmas scene before developing into an exaggerated celebration, built around what Asda calls the ‘Asda Boom’ moment.

The soundtrack is equally unconventional. A remixed version of Martin Garrix’s dance track Animals replaces the traditional sentimental Christmas soundtrack, giving the advertising a more energetic identity.

The commercial message is straightforward. Customers should not have to abandon the food, presents, decorations and family traditions they associate with Christmas simply because household budgets remain under pressure.

Value becomes the main attraction

Tom Hampson, Group Marketing Director at Asda, says customers do not want a smaller Christmas; they want to spend less while retaining the experiences that make the season special.

The campaign supports Asda’s positioning as a one-stop Christmas destination, bringing together food, drink, George clothing, gifts and home decorations across television, social media, outdoor advertising and digital channels.

A seven-week social competition will also give seven families £500 Asda vouchers towards their festive celebrations.

Two retailers, two Christmas strategies

The timing alongside John Lewis’s new campaign is noteworthy. John Lewis is concentrating on thoughtful gifting and intergenerational relationships, while Asda is making affordability the centre of its proposition.

For supermarket retailers, the message is particularly relevant. Christmas remains a major sales opportunity, but consumers are increasingly conscious of what their celebrations cost.

Asda’s challenge is to demonstrate that value does not mean compromising on the occasion. In a competitive Christmas market, that may prove just as important as producing an advert people remember.
