Daniel Bernard, One of Retail’s Greatest Visionaries, Has Passed Away at 80

The global retail industry has lost one of its true pioneers with the passing of Daniel Bernard, the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Carrefour. He was 80 years old.

For those of us who have followed the supermarket industry for decades, Daniel Bernard was much more than a successful executive. He was one of the leaders who transformed modern food retailing, helping to shape the supermarket industry we know today.

During his tenure at Carrefour, Bernard oversaw one of the most significant moments in European retail history with the merger between Carrefour and Promodès in 1999. The deal created one of the world’s largest retail groups and firmly established Carrefour as a global force, with operations stretching across Europe, Latin America and Asia.

His leadership was defined by ambition, international expansion and a clear vision of the future. He understood that retailing was about much more than selling products—it was about building customer trust, improving food quality, developing strong supplier relationships and constantly innovating to meet changing consumer expectations.

I had the privilege of interviewing Daniel Bernard during his remarkable career. What impressed me most was not only his strategic thinking but also his openness and genuine passion for retail. He spoke with conviction about the future of supermarkets, international growth and the responsibility retailers have towards consumers and suppliers alike.

Throughout more than three decades covering the international supermarket industry, I have met many retail executives, but Daniel Bernard belonged to a select group of visionary leaders whose decisions influenced retail markets far beyond their own companies. His impact can still be seen in today’s global retail landscape.

Even after leaving Carrefour, Bernard continued contributing to the industry through leadership roles with international retailers and advisory boards, sharing the experience and knowledge that had made him one of the most respected figures in global commerce.

The supermarket industry has evolved dramatically over the past twenty-five years, with digital transformation, private label growth, sustainability and artificial intelligence changing the way retailers operate. Yet many of the foundations of Carrefour’s international success were established during Daniel Bernard’s leadership.

His passing marks the end of an era for European retail.

On behalf of International Supermarket News, we extend our sincere condolences to his family, friends and former colleagues. The retail world has lost one of its great architects, but his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of retailers and business leaders around the world.
