London, Bakers Basco, the membership scheme formed by the UK’s leading plant bakers to manage and protect shared bakery equipment has doubled its tracking capabilities across Ireland as new figures reveal a rise in enforcement activity and a concentrated hotspot of equipment misuse in Belfast.
During its latest enforcement visit, Bakers Basco’s investigations team recovered 1,326 baskets and 1,097 dollies from unsecure locations, while 51 separate leads were investigated (+6% increase over the previous reporting period), resulting in £12.6k in charges issued to businesses found misusing equipment.
A key development from this period was the discovery of more than 80 baskets secured from outside shops in central Belfast, all believed to be linked to an unauthorised bakery operation delivering into the region from England on a weekly basis.
While the findings highlight a growing challenge around unregulated supply chain activity and its impact on equipment loss, they also point to a growing volume of actionable intelligence and a more targeted approach to tackling misuse.
“This latest operation shows just how targeted and persistent misuse can be in specific locations,” said Stacey Brown, National Investigations Manager at Bakers Basco. “The volume of equipment recovered in Belfast alone, and the link to unauthorised supply activity, demonstrates the importance of continued vigilance and industry collaboration.”
Alongside recovery efforts, the team also completed a driver briefing at Allied Bakeries in Belfast, reinforcing best practice in identifying and reporting misuse across logistics networks.
To further strengthen its enforcement capabilities, Bakers Basco has increased tracker deployment across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, doubling its tracking capacity in the region. This enhanced visibility is expected to support more proactive identification of misuse and faster recovery of assets.
Progress also continues on the legal front, with two cases now successfully settled in Northern Ireland, reinforcing Bakers Basco’s commitment to taking action against misuse and holding offenders to account.
