Lidl Expands Presence in Southern Spain with New High-Efficiency Store in Málaga Province

The discount retail sector continues its strong upward trajectory in Spain, with Lidl opening a new supermarket in Alhaurín de la Torre, Málaga. The store represents an investment of more than €3 million and has created 25 new jobs, underscoring the chain’s commitment to regional growth and local employment.

The new location features more than 1,500 square metres of retail space, designed to offer an efficient and modern shopping experience. It includes sustainable technologies such as LED lighting, low-consumption refrigeration systems and electric-vehicle charging stations—reflecting Lidl’s broader environmental strategy across Europe.

In addition to its typical assortment, the store highlights local Andalusian suppliers, including dairy, beverages and bakery products. The presence of dedicated specialty sections, such as high-protein ranges, mirrors evolving consumer preferences toward fitness-oriented nutrition. To complement the launch, the store is hosting cheese tastings and product demonstrations, inviting shoppers to explore regional flavours.

The opening forms part of Lidl’s ongoing expansion in the region, where rising demand for value-focused supermarkets has driven significant investment in recent years. The brand has strengthened its position by combining low prices with improved store aesthetics, a broader fresh-food range and increasingly engaging in-store experiences.

As competition intensifies between discount formats and traditional chains, Lidl’s strategy in Andalusia demonstrates how retailers are adapting to maintain relevance with consumers who seek both affordability and quality.
