Lidl GB has set out an ambitious growth strategy, confirming plans to launch more than 50 new stores across Great Britain within the next year, backed by an investment exceeding £600 million.
The move represents one of the most significant expansion programmes currently underway in the UK grocery sector and is expected to deliver nearly 2,000 new jobs nationwide. The retailer continues to position itself as a key employer within the industry, offering some of the most competitive wages in the supermarket sector.
New locations earmarked for development include Abbots Langley near Watford, Warrington in Cheshire, and Thornbury in Gloucestershire, all scheduled to open during the summer months.
Beyond retail growth, the expansion is also set to benefit domestic suppliers. With approximately two-thirds of its product range already sourced from British producers, the additional store openings are expected to create further opportunities for long-term partnerships within the UK’s agricultural and food sectors.
To support its enlarging footprint, Lidl is also advancing its logistics network. Construction of a new distribution centre in Leeds is progressing, with operations anticipated to commence next year. In London, the retailer has submitted proposals to extend and integrate its existing facilities in Belvedere, further strengthening its supply chain capabilities.
Chief Executive Ryan McDonnell emphasised the broader impact of the initiative, noting that the company’s growth is closely tied to regional development. He highlighted Lidl’s commitment not only to job creation but also to ensuring affordable, nutritious food remains accessible to communities across the country.
Kate Dearden welcomed the announcement, describing the investment as a strong endorsement of the government’s economic agenda. She underlined the importance of responsible corporate expansion in driving job creation and improving living standards.
As part of its continued growth strategy, Lidl GB is actively seeking new sites for retail and logistics development, including freehold and leasehold opportunities. Later this month, the company will host a major property showcase event in London, bringing together more than 150 partners and agents to outline its future plans and reinforce industry collaboration.
