Ahmad Tea has officially been awarded the prestigious Social Impact Initiative of the Year at The Grocer Gold Awards. The accolade recognizes the company’s pioneering Hand-picked Profit Shared programme, an initiative designed to structurally rebalance the tea supply chain by returning profits directly to the agricultural workers who harvest the leaves.
The award ceremony celebrated outstanding achievements across the grocery sector, with the judging panel praising the program’s measurable success in driving financial independence and closing living wage gaps in at-risk farming communities.
Redefining the Supply Chain: The “Hand-Picked” Mission
The story of a cup of tea historically begins with tea pickers—predominantly women—who represent some of the lowest-paid agricultural laborers globally. Despite their essential role in the production pipeline, these workers have traditionally been excluded from the commercial profits generated by the global tea trade.
Ahmad Tea launched the Hand-picked Profit Shared initiative to fundamentally disrupt this dynamic through targeted financial intervention:
- Direct Digital Bonuses: Bypassing standard informal cash payments, the program distributes annual bonuses safely and directly into workers’ personal bank accounts.
- Financial Inclusion Barriers: Recognizing that many female tea workers lacked banking access, Ahmad Tea actively sponsored financial literacy campaigns and assisted thousands of women in establishing secure, individual digital accounts.
- Empowerment Over Income: By facilitating private digital banking, the initiative provides women in regions like India, Sri Lanka, Malawi, and Kenya with sole control over their earnings, fostering unprecedented economic agency.
Scaled Impact and Measurable Progress
The program’s rapid expansion and tangible results caught the immediate attention of the judging panel. Within its first two years of operation, the data-driven initiative scaled to double its initial footprint:
- First-Year Benchmarks (2024): More than 6,000 eligible tea pickers received direct bonuses equivalent to three to four days’ worth of traditional wages, effectively cutting the regional living wage gap by half.
- Current Operational Scope: The program has scaled to benefit more than 12,000 workers across key international sourcing hubs, increasing both total participant volume and the per-capita value of the financial distribution.
Industry Acclaim and Future Commitments
Industry judges praised the project for tackling deep-seated economic challenges with systemic, scalable solutions. One judge noted that the campaign “delved into the problem in great depth and helped at-risk people in some of the poorest countries in the world,” while another underscored that “digital payments transform work in developing countries—this is very empowering and life-changing for women.”
While the recognition highlights a landmark achievement for the brand, representatives emphasize that the award serves as a motivator to further expand the framework. Going forward, the team remains focused on scaling digital mapping, broadening global supplier participation, and continuing the push toward a completely fair and transparent supply network.
