Sainsbury’s has joined the Retail Trust’s Let’s Respect Retail campaign, adding the UK’s second-largest supermarket group to an industry effort to tackle abuse and aggression directed at shop workers.
The campaign is intended to reach customers through stores, online channels and till receipts, encouraging more respectful behaviour as retailers enter the busy Christmas trading period.
For supermarkets, the timing matters. Christmas brings higher footfall, longer queues, more promotional activity and greater pressure on front-line teams. An incident involving a member of staff can affect not only the individual but also colleagues, customers and store operations.
Sainsbury’s chief retail, logistics and supply chain officer Tracey Clements said no colleague should have to worry about abuse, threats or violence at work. The retailer says it is investing in measures to protect colleagues and customers, while recognising that the wider industry must act together.
The Retail Trust launched the campaign in 2022. M&S has also backed the initiative.
The challenge for retailers is turning public messages into practical protection: reporting incidents, supporting affected employees, training managers and ensuring staff know when and how to seek help.
As Christmas approaches, the issue is becoming part of store readiness, not simply a public-relations campaign.
