Tesco has launched Plentifuel, a range of chilled meals designed to provide protein, fibre and selected essential micronutrients in convenient portions.
The initial line contains five 300g meals priced at £3 each, including katsu chicken, pesto chicken pasta, beef and lentil bolognese, chicken and chorizo paella, and three-bean chilli. Tesco says the products were developed with nutritionists and chefs.
The launch reflects a shift in how supermarkets are thinking about meal sizes and nutritional value. Some shoppers are eating less because of weight-management medication, age or lifestyle choices, while still wanting meals that provide a useful range of nutrients.
Tesco is not entering an empty space. M&S introduced its own nutrient-dense range earlier this year. That makes the category worth watching for food manufacturers, especially those able to combine manageable portions with strong nutritional credentials.
For retailers, the commercial question is whether the offer can reach beyond a specialist audience and become a regular part of the chilled-meal fixture.
The next step will be range development and repeat purchasing. A new category can attract attention at launch, but sustained sales will depend on taste, price, availability and whether shoppers see a clear benefit over existing meals.
