Algeria is entering a new economic phase as major natural resource projects move from exploration to production. With expanded gas output, new mineral discoveries and growing investment in infrastructure, analysts believe the country’s GDP could potentially double over the next decade if projects are executed efficiently and global demand remains strong.
The backbone of Algeria’s economy remains hydrocarbons. The state energy company Sonatrach continues to increase gas production capacity, particularly as European markets seek stable and diversified energy supplies. Long-term supply contracts and new field developments are expected to strengthen export revenues significantly.
Beyond oil and gas, Algeria has identified substantial untapped mineral resources. Iron ore projects in the south-west, phosphate reserves in the east, and rare earth and strategic minerals are attracting increasing attention from foreign investors. If these deposits are fully developed with value-added processing inside the country, they could transform Algeria from a raw material exporter into an industrial hub.
Another key factor is energy transition positioning. Algeria has strong solar potential, and green hydrogen projects are being discussed as future export opportunities to Europe. Combining traditional hydrocarbons with renewable energy exports could diversify revenue streams and reduce vulnerability to oil price volatility.
However, doubling GDP will not depend on extraction alone. Success will require regulatory stability, improved logistics, foreign partnerships, and a stronger manufacturing base to process raw materials locally. Investment in ports, rail networks and industrial zones will be critical to ensure that resource wealth translates into sustainable growth and employment.
If managed strategically, Algeria’s new resource cycle could mark the beginning of a broader economic transformation. The coming years will determine whether the country simply increases export revenues or uses this opportunity to reshape its economy for long-term prosperity.
