ALCAMPO PLANS UP TO 100 NEW STORES AS SPANISH SUPERMARKET FIGHTS BACK

Alcampo is reportedly preparing a major expansion in Spain, with plans to open between 80 and 100 new stores during 2026, according to Spanish media.

The expansion represents a significant change in direction for the Auchan-owned supermarket chain, which went through a difficult restructuring period and closed stores in 2025.

The new strategy places greater emphasis on proximity stores and franchising rather than relying solely on the traditional hypermarket model. Alcampo opened 11 new franchise stores during 2025 and is now looking to accelerate the format.

The reported 2026 programme involves an investment of around €80 million and includes the development of a franchised hypermarket in Illescas, Toledo.

The strategy reflects one of the biggest changes taking place in Spanish grocery retail: consumers increasingly want convenient neighbourhood stores while still expecting competitive prices.

Alcampo is attempting to respond by expanding its network while using franchise partners to accelerate growth.

The move is particularly interesting because it follows a period of contraction. Alcampo announced the closure of 25 Spanish supermarkets in 2025, with up to 710 jobs affected.

The latest strategy therefore represents a significant attempt to rebuild the chain’s presence.

ISN view: Alcampo’s reported expansion shows that store closures do not necessarily mean the end of physical supermarket growth. The format, location and economics of the store are changing. Proximity and franchising could become increasingly important in Spain’s highly competitive grocery market.
