Will Kaufland and Aldi soon do away with cash payments completely? A German tech chain is going ahead and accepting only card payment. Now the grocers are speaking out about their plans.
In recent weeks, there has been much discussion about the end of the EC card for shopping. Kaufland. In 2023, a lot of things will change in the supermarket. In addition to the changes to the classic Girocard, cash payments could soon be threatened with extinction.
As a result of the Corona pandemic, many customers have indeed become accustomed to paying exclusively by card. This means that Kaufland and Aldi might well consider adopting a new approach to payment methods in their shops.
Kaufland clearly took a position on completely cashless payment with its statement. The grocery giant from Neckarsulm explains: “We want to give our customers the opportunity to pay in the way that is most convenient for them. Of course, our customers can therefore continue to pay with cash in our shops.”
The company, which is part of the Schwarz Group, also states that customers with a purchase value of 10 euros or more can “withdraw cash at the checkout with their Girocard”. And the discounter Aldi Süd has also made a clear statement about a future without cash payments in its own shops.
With the orientation towards all common means of payment, Kaufland and Aldi are probably still in line with the trend of the majority of German retailers. According to various studies, cash is still the most popular means of payment for more than half of the customers.
