Lidl GB has become the first UK supermarket to have its own-label rice verified under the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) label, marking a major step forward in responsible sourcing and environmental sustainability.
The verified rice is now available in Lidl stores across the country and is designed to support higher environmental and social standards throughout the supply chain.
Rice production is one of the world’s most important agricultural industries, supporting around 150 million farmers globally. However, traditional rice farming methods place significant pressure on natural resources, accounting for up to 40% of global freshwater use while also contributing around 10% of global methane emissions.
Lidl said the new SRP verification standard aims to tackle these challenges by encouraging farming practices that use fewer resources, improve environmental protection and help farmers increase productivity and income. The framework also improves traceability across the supply chain, allowing greater transparency from farm to store shelves.
The supermarket described the move as part of its wider commitment to responsible sourcing and human rights. The announcement follows Lidl GB achieving all of its 2025 raw material sourcing targets.
Over recent years Lidl has carried out Human Rights Impact Assessments across several key supply chains, including Kenyan tea, Colombian bananas, Italian tinned tomatoes and South African wine. The company says these assessments help identify challenges within sourcing operations while supporting long-term improvements both in the UK and internationally.
Charlotte Curtress, Head of Quality and Sustainability at Lidl GB, described the launch as an important milestone for the retailer’s sustainability strategy.
She said the verified rice standard directly addresses environmental concerns by protecting natural resources while also helping farming communities through more efficient cultivation methods. Curtress added that Lidl will continue expanding its responsible sourcing programmes and is already conducting further environmental and human rights assessments within the rice supply chain.
The Sustainable Rice Platform also welcomed Lidl’s decision to introduce the verified products.
Peter McAllister, Executive Director at the Sustainable Rice Platform, said rice production has a major impact on both climate and local environments. He said Lidl’s adoption of SRP-verified rice sends a strong message about sustainability while helping farmers improve productivity, strengthen climate resilience and reduce environmental impact.
Lidl said the initiative reflects its broader philosophy that sustainability should be accessible to all customers rather than being treated as a premium option. By introducing SRP-verified rice at affordable prices, the retailer hopes to combine value with responsible sourcing standards.
The move comes as supermarkets across the UK face growing pressure from consumers, investors and environmental groups to improve sustainability across global supply chains. Retailers are increasingly focusing on reducing emissions, improving traceability and ensuring fair treatment for workers involved in producing everyday products.
With environmental concerns surrounding food production continuing to rise, Lidl’s latest initiative could place additional pressure on rival supermarkets to introduce similar standards across staple products in the future.
